How does a starter works?

A starter is a component that converts electrical energy into mechancial energy.  The electrical energy is supplied from the vehicle battery.  When the starter switch is operated, current flows through the starters field coils and armature conductors and two magnetic fields are set up.  These magnetic fields cause a turning movement, which is used for rotating the engines flywheel.

A considerable amount of mechancial power is required to start the engine (about 2 or 3 h.p) and the starting current is usually in the region of 250 to 500 amps.

How an Alternator works?

An alternator produces alternative current (A.C) which is converted to direct current (D.C) before being connected to the vehicle electrical system (a batter can only store direct current).  The conversion from alternative current to direct current is done by diodes (both neg – and pos +) fitted in the rectifier, the output of the alternator is controlled by means of a regulator 14.4 volts for a 12v system and 28 volts for a 24v system, these are the most common settings.
